Energy-efficient rooflights

Thermal performance depends on the complete rooflight installation, not the glass alone.

Understanding U-values

A lower U-value indicates less heat transfer. Check whether a quoted figure applies to the centre pane, the complete glass unit or the overall roof window because these measurements are not interchangeable.

Insulated aluminium roof lanterns

The Sheerline S1 lantern uses Thermlock multi-chamber insulation within key aluminium sections. The specified glass, kerb construction and quality of installation remain important parts of the overall result.

Avoiding thermal weak points

A poorly insulated upstand, gaps in seals or cold bridging around the roof opening can undermine good glass performance. Kerb design and weatherproofing should be considered from the start of the roof project.

Solar gain and comfort

Energy efficiency is also about summer comfort. Solar-control glass and suitable ventilation may be worth considering in large, sunny or south-facing glazed spaces.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminium roof lanterns thermally efficient?

Modern thermally broken aluminium systems can provide strong performance when combined with suitable glazing. The S1 uses Sheerline's Thermlock multi-chamber technology rather than relying on uninsulated aluminium.

Does more roof glass always mean more heat loss?

The result depends on glass, frame, size, kerb and installation. Roof glazing can reduce daytime lighting demand, but its winter heat loss and summer solar gain should be considered as part of the whole extension design.

How can overheating be reduced?

Consider solar-control glazing, suitable rooflight size, external shading where practical and controllable ventilation. SheerVent provides a purpose-designed high-level ventilation option for suitable S1 lanterns.
