Choosing roof lantern glass

The best glass specification depends on orientation, room use, total glazed area and the amount of direct sunlight. A south-facing kitchen may benefit from solar-control glass, while a shaded room may prioritise maximum light transmission.

Solar-control roof glass

Solar-control coatings are designed to reduce a proportion of the sun's heat entering through the roof glazing. Performance and appearance vary by glass type, so compare the current manufacturer's figures rather than relying only on colour names.

Thermal performance

Centre-pane U-values describe the glass rather than the complete installed roof lantern. Frame design, glass specification, kerb construction and installation quality all contribute to overall performance.

Self-cleaning coatings

Some roof-glass specifications use a specialist exterior coating intended to loosen organic dirt and help rainwater wash it away. It reduces cleaning frequency but does not eliminate maintenance.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Which roof glass is best for a south-facing extension?

A south-facing glazed roof may benefit from solar-control glass to reduce summer heat gain. The best specification depends on the total glass area, room use, shading and ventilation, so compare verified performance figures.

Does tinted roof glass make a room dark?

Solar-control glass can alter colour and light transmission, but the effect varies between products. Consider the glass area and obtain a current sample or manufacturer data when appearance is important.

What does a centre-pane U-value mean?

It measures heat transfer through the central area of the glass and does not represent the complete roof lantern or rooflight. Frame, edge, kerb and installation performance also matter.

Is self-cleaning roof glass maintenance free?

No. The coating helps loosen organic dirt and allows rainwater to wash away more residue, but occasional cleaning may still be required, particularly beneath trees or where rainfall does not reach evenly.
