How to measure for a roof lantern quotation
Accurate kerb dimensions are essential. Use this guide to collect the information we need before manufacture.
Measure the external kerb
For an initial quotation we normally need the outside-to-outside width and length of the finished upstand or kerb. Measure at more than one point because older kerbs may not be perfectly square or parallel.
Check diagonals and kerb condition
Measure both diagonals to help identify whether the opening is square. For replacement work, also photograph the kerb, internal reveals, roof covering and drainage details. A survey may still be required before manufacture.
Do not rely on the old lantern size
An existing lantern may overlap the kerb or use a different fixing detail. Ordering from the visible frame size can produce the wrong dimensions. Use the required manufacturer's kerb measurement and obtain professional advice if uncertain.
Information to send
Provide width, length, approximate kerb height, roof finish, delivery postcode, colour choices, glass preference and whether a vent or installation service is required.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Which roof lantern dimensions should I send?
For an initial S1 quotation, send the required external width and length of the finished kerb or upstand. We will confirm the precise measuring convention before an order is approved.
Why should I measure the kerb in several places?
Existing openings can be tapered, bowed or out of square. Multiple width, length and diagonal measurements expose differences that a single measurement would miss.
Can you manufacture from my builder's drawings?
Drawings are useful for quotation and planning, but final manufacturing dimensions must be approved by the responsible person. Site dimensions should normally be checked when the kerb is complete.
Do you offer a measuring survey?
A survey is available for suitable installation projects within approximately 20 miles of Bristol. Nationwide supply-only customers should use a competent installer or surveyor to confirm dimensions.
